Cutting edge food waste recycling programme
At Cawleys, we’re pleased to work alongside the forward thinking team at Ashridge Executive Education, part of Hult International Business School the world class education facility, based in Hertfordshire to develop a waste management solution that meets best practice guidelines and utilises cutting edge technologies.
In the summer of 2015, the Ashridge Executive Education teamed up with Edie Magazine to launch a series of articles tackling the growing debate about sustainability best practice. Each article in the series is written from a member of the School’s leading Masters course in Sustainability and Responsibility.
As Dr Gill Coleman described to Edie, the series reflects the school’s innovative approach to sustainability, “our work puts us in contact with a wide range of people from all over the world working for sustainability, which we are drawing on here.”
And this advanced approach to sustainability extends to the daily recycling and waste management at Ashridge. Cawleys works with the Ashridge team to ensure that the organisation achieves zero waste to landfill targets.
Ashridge House, has been a renowned seat of learning as a monastery since 1283 and the current 19th century building was designed by James Wyatt. The house is also surrounded by 77 hectares of grounds and gardens designed by Humphry Repton.
Not only does Ashridge boast a world-renowned executive education facility but a full conference suite, meeting rooms and holds a wedding licence for over 100 guests. With a multi-functional work space, Ashridge needs an inventive approach to managing their waste resources.
Providing gold standard of food waste recycling
Cawleys uses a range of high-tech solutions to secure the highest recycling levels. This includes anaerobic digestion, known as the gold standard in waste management, to ensure all food waste is recycled and composted. Cawleys collects all food waste from Ashridge and takes it to a dedicated commercial food waste recycling plant.
Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a naturally biological process using micro-organisms to break down organic matter in to valuable fertiliser which also produces biogas. By processing the waste through AD when compared to landfill, we are preventing the emissions of 905kg of carbon per tonne of food waste being emitted to the atmosphere.
