West End Barns team up with Cawleys to improve their eco-credentials

With Summer just around the corner, lots of us are looking for the perfect outdoor venue to soak up the sun and enjoy some refreshing snacks and drinks and West End Barns is the perfect place - a takeaway café based on a family-run working farm in Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire.

The family-run café operates with an ethos of being an environmentally sustainable business which supports the local community. They have further improved their eco-credentials by partnering up with Cawleys, the largest independent, family-run recycling and waste management company in the region, as their exclusive recycling partner.

West End Barns relationship with Cawleys will allow them to have their general waste collected and taken to Cawleys Material Recycling Facility for further processing. Once there the waste will be separated and sorted ensuring as much material is recycled as possible from their waste.

Cawleys main site is home to an impressive processing site that handles around 1000 tons of waste a day. It is equipped with more than 3km of conveyor belts, uses high tech optical detectors to separate plastic from paper and state-of-the-art magnetic technology to sort metals.

Commenting on the partnership, Vicky Smith from West End Barns said: “Minimising our impact on the planet is extremely important to us. Unsurprisingly we are huge advocates of anything that supports the environment. Working together with Cawleys allows us to further complement this ethos ensuring the waste from our café is put to good use and repurposed and recycled”.

Since opening in March 2021, West End Barns has worked hard to ensure  they are an environmentally sustainable business and support their local community. Their partnership with Cawleys is the first of many actions the family-run organisation has taken in order to improve its environmental footprint.

  • All the products within their ‘local produce’ range that they sell through the barn are items sourced from local businesses which not only reduces food miles but also helps to support other small businesses within Hertfordshire.

  • Wherever possible they use plastic-free packaging - this includes everything from coffee cups, straws, cake boxes and cutlery

  • They also work with lots of local businesses for their needs, reducing produce mileage and also supporting their local community businesses

Anna Cawley, Communications and Strategy Director said: “As an independent family operated business, we care about our local community. We are delighted to be supporting a fellow family-run organisation improving its environmental foundations. Recycling is crucial and we’re happy to be helping West End Barns in achieving their environmental goals”.
